## When the desktop matters.

Local files, device access, background work and offline operation can make a native application the right choice. Identify what the user needs at the machine before deciding how much of the application should depend on a server.

## Make everyday actions feel direct.

Design keyboard navigation, window behaviour, selection, search and long-running tasks as part of one interaction model. Keep the interface responsive while work continues, with clear progress, cancellation and recovery when something fails.

## Use the platform deliberately.

Permissions, process boundaries, memory use and local storage need explicit handling. Connections to other services need timeouts and retry behaviour. Sensitive credentials belong in an appropriate protected store, away from ordinary logs and exported settings.

## A release needs more than a build.

Plan installation, signing, updates and rollback for the target operating system. Test a clean machine as well as a developer’s workstation, and make configuration, migration and uninstallation part of release testing.

**What is a native app?** An application compiled for the operating system it runs on, using that system’s windowing, input, storage and security directly rather than through a browser or a runtime layer.

**Native app or web app?** Native when the work needs the device: offline operation, local files, hardware, speed or the platform’s own security store. Web when reach and zero installation matter more. Many estates need both, sharing one record behind them.

**Which platforms do you build for?** The platforms the task requires. We confirm the target operating systems, their versions and the distribution route (store, enterprise channel or direct) in the design, rather than listing a standard set.
